  • Maya Wright Florencio is the driving force behind Three Wright Lights. Maya’s roots are in Buffalo, NY. AFter marrying her husband, Don, a captain in the US Army, they moved to Hawaii.

    Maya’s journey into strength sports commenced with a local CrossFit class in 2015. From there, her path evolved to embrace powerlifting, marking her participation in competitive events since 2017.

    After her graduation from Niagara Fall s Culinary Institute with a degree in Baking & Pastry Arts, Maya embarked on her next pursuit. Sher earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Exercise Science & Physiology and Nutrition, respectively. This journey was not only one of academia, but also marked the intersection of her life with Don. His experiences in Army ROTC and later as a serviceman ignited Maya’s passion to create specialized raining programs that empower soldiers for their demanding roles, focusing on safety and longevity.

    Guided by these aspirations, Maya Skillfully merged her internships and research into crafting programs tailored to sports-specific exercises and the unique recovery needs of those undergoing high physical and occupational stress. Maya’s impressive achievements in powerlifting are a testament to her competence in guiding strength and nutrition pursuits.

  • MS Nutrition Science: This degree encompassed learning sport-specific nutrition, lifecycle nutrition, the human metabolism, and the utilization of macronutrients in bodily function.

    BS Exercise Science & Physiology: This degree provided a deep understanding of human movement, physiology and biomechanics. This allowed Maya to develop an expertise in exercise prescription, nutrition’s impact on performance, and clinical exercise programming. Through her internships and lab experience, she has built skills to excel as a knowledgeable and effective strength professional.

    AAS Baking & Pastry Arts: Combining a degree in baking and pastry with a master’s degree in nutrition creates a unique skillset for a well-rounded nutritionist. Maya’s background provides insight into ingredients, food preparation, and flavor profiles. This knowledge enhances the ability to guide clients towards their healthier dietary choices while understanding their culinary preferences. The synergy between cooking expertise and advanced nutrition studies allows for Maya to offer practical, enjoyable, and health-conscious guidance, bridging the gap between culinary arts and optimal nutrition.

  • CrossFit Group Instructor At two CrossFit boxes, Maya helped develop workouts and instruct group classes. She worked one-on-one with participants so that they could achieve different goals, watched and improved performance.

    Sport-Specific Group & Personal Training During her bachelor’s degree, Maya took an internship at Cutting Edge Performance in Clarence, NY. This training center took on local high school, college, and professional athletes during both their off-season and on-season for a variety of team sports including lacrosse, hockey, softball, etc. Maya helped develop and test workouts, and then instruct and guide athletes through them.

    Emergency Responder Human Performance Lab ERHPL is the University at Buffalo’s heat research lab. The research and labs conducted are designed to gain a deeper understanding of the stresses associated with emergency responders, military personnel, endurance athletes, Wild Land Fire Fighters, etc. The aim is to develop interventions that enhance their health and safety. Maya actively participated in conducting studies and experiments with various training environments. Notable examples include performance and recovery protocols applied to construction workers, Wild Land firefighters, Navy SEALs, and female soldiers in the Army Infantry, focusing on optimizing performance in high-temperature settings. Additionally, Maya coauthored a study that explored the contrasting effects of hot and cold water recovery following intensive aerobic exercise. This experience provided Maya with valuable insights into the challenges these groups confront and effective methods to prepare them for their roles and support their recovery.
